“Sound Mind, Sound Body…”

What is Sound Healing?
Sound healing is the therapeutic application of sound frequencies to a person with the intention of bringing them into a state of harmony and health by balancing the physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual aspect of their being.
Sound Healing practices include the following:
– Voice (singing, chanting, vocal toning, singing with others, singing with music)
– Listening (to another’s voice or voices, to instruments, to recorded music through a speaker or headphones)
– Vibrational (Direct contact on the body with specific sound healing instruments)
Music has had a powerful presence in the human experience ever since the beginning of time and across all cultures around the world. Many will insist that music is the universal language and simply put, music is nothing but organized sound. Sound healing has been around for thousands of years but has been lost as music became identified more as an entertainment activity. One must ask why music is the entertainment that influences us most and without question, everyone gravitates towards. Music is a part of everyone’s life. When we listen to music, we in essence are healing ourselves without even knowing it. Don’t you ever wonder why you like one kind of music one day and a different genre or sound on another day. Just imagine if you could understand at a deeper level how music and sound affect your body and how you can use this with clear intention to evolve and heal your mind, body, and soul. You can use sound to not only to heal, but to guide yourself in understanding your energetic and emotional blocks and to tune yourself back into a balanced existence.
Sound is vibrational in nature, and we are vibrational beings. Science shows us that all life is vibrational in nature which alludes to the vibrational Creation of all that is. Many cultures and religions revere sound so deeply as to believe it called the universe into being. For the Hindus, all was dark and quiet in the universe, until the first movement in the universe created the sound “AUM”. It is the mother tone, containing the frequencies of all other sounds.
Everything that moves vibrates, from the smallest molecule to the universe itself. As long as it is vibrating, it is making some kind of sound. We may not perceive the sound, as it may be below or above the threshold of our hearing. The human ear can hear sound vibrations between 20 and 20,000 cycles per second, although we also perceive sound by skin and bone conduction, ingesting and consuming it with the whole body. Scientific studies show that sound can produce changes in the autonomic, immune, endocrine and neuropeptide systems. Every atom, molecule, cell, gland, and organ of the human body absorbs and emits sound. The entire body, as well as our brain waves in a relaxed state, vibrates at a fundamental frequency of about 8 cycles per second, literally entraining and attuning us to the basic electromagnetic field of the earth itself!
The late Dr. Hans Jenny, a Swiss scientist, rendered vibrations into physical forms, using sand, iron filings, and other materials, creating a multitude of kaleidoscopic images. This study of patterns and shapes is called cymatics. Many modern scientists and doctors are translating this work into medical practice.
By working with specific notes that resonate at the frequency you need most, you are essentially harmonizing your energy centers which have an impact on your organs, hence the saying, “Sound Mind, Sound Body.”
How Does Sound Healing Work?
Each organism has its own vibratory rate. Every object in the universe has its own unique resonant frequency. Tap a wineglass and it will emit a ringing sound determined by its size, shape and the thickness. When an opera singer vibrates a glass with her voice the singer has matched her voice to the resonant frequency of the glass and set it into vibration. As the singer increases the volume of her sound the resonance becomes too great for the forces that hold the glass together and it shatters. Luckily, our bodies are more flexible than a glass! The cells of our body enjoy the vibration of sound.

If one ‘C’ tuning fork is struck and placed next to another ‘C’ tuning fork, the second tuning fork will begin to resonate together with the first tuning fork. The sound wave from the first tuning fork has imparted some of its energy to the second one. If the stem of the tuning fork is placed on a metal, glass or wooden object, this object will begin to vibrate. A simple experiment can be conducted by placing a tuning fork on the top of one’s head. You will find that bone is an excellent conductor of sound.

In air sound travels at 340 metres per second ( 760mph).
In water sound travels at 1,500 metres per second ( 3,350mph).
In glass sound travels at 5,600 metres per second (12,500mph).

The human body is made up of 70% water; this makes it a very good conductor of sound.

Modern medicine now uses sound waves to break up kidney and gallstones in the body. The machine used is called a Lithotripter. This machine bombards the stones with a specific sound frequency for one to two hours. The patient is admitted in the morning and discharged in the evening. Generally no anesthetic is needed. With most patients only one treatment is necessary to break the stones down. The pulverized stone is passed out of the body through the urine.

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is now used in some NHS hospitals and private clinics to treat prostate cancer. The therapy closely targets tumors, causing much less damage to healthy tissue than conventional surgery or radiotherapy.

Every organ, every bone, every cell in the body has its own resonant frequency. Together they make up a composite frequency like the instruments of an orchestra. When one organ in the body is out of tune it will affect the whole body.

Through the principle of resonance it is possible to use sound to bring the body back into harmony hence avoiding the need for drugs or surgery.
